Stories That Slay

What is PR? We find out from some of the country’s top tech journalists

PR doesn’t stand for press release. PR is storytelling. And the pages don’t write themselves.

Good PR (or public relations to those still mistaking it for a set-and-forget “press release”) is a verb. It needs to be an active, ever-changing mix of cut-through, agenda-setting proactive pitches that set your story apart from the rest, and reactive opportunities to hack the news cycle and get your voice heard when and where it matters most.

The Regional PR Co. went to an event hosted by Fishburners, Australia’s largest and leading ecosystem of startups and entrepreneurs, to hear from some of the country’s most notable tech journalists and publicists about what makes good PR.

Here are our top six takeaways on how best to earn the attention startups need to disrupt the world.

  1. Be succinct and clear
  2. Give your brand a stance to stand out
  3. Do newsworthy things
  4. Be reactive
  5. Be proactive
  6. Have an authentic voice, and a clearly defined point of difference

If there’s just one hack to remember, ask yourself: why should people care about this?

Good PR is always about the people – those it’s about, and those it’s speaking to. PR is strategic and targets a specific demographic, whether they be newspaper or magazine readers, podcast listeners, potential customers or various stakeholders.

The panel included: Marie Dowling and Stephanie Palmer-Derrien from Newsary, Tegan Jones from SmartCompany, Simon Thomsen from Startup Daily, and Elle Kress from Hey Goodnews.
